What is MS?
Despite his MS, Kenny races to raise funds for MSAVMultiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, incurable, and progressive autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from tingling sensations to near paralysis. Its progressive nature worsens symptoms over time. Fatigue, pain and cognitive problems are common. It usually begins with people from 20 to 50. Women are affected far more than men. It is no longer considered a rare disease.  1 out of 350 people are diagnosed with MS each year,  Chances are you have a family member, relative, coworker or know someone with MS.
Multiple Sclerosis Alliance of Virginia (MSAV):
The MSAV is a 100% volunteer organization focused on helping provide programs, events, activities and services for people whose lives have been affected by MS. We seek to empower and educate people living with MS, their care partners, friends and family. We guide people to organizations that can assist with their needs as well as contribute to awareness in the community by providing educational programs for young people, first responders and community organizations. All money raised by the MSAV stays stay right here in our community.
Attendees at the 2017 Snowball for MSAVThe MSAV is headquartered in Roanoke and serves Roanoke, Salem and surrounding counties.  We are not backed by any national organizations.  Our funding comes from local donations and scholarships or grants.  Key programs supported by MSAV include monthly daytime and evening meetings of MS support groups; a spring MS Awareness Weekend event, an annual conference that brings together health professionals, pharmaceutical companies and MS folks from the area.  We provide assistance to people with MS including loaner equipment, helping find people who can build ramps, etc.  One of our most popular programs is Cinderella's Closet, which during our annual conference pampers our attendees with donated evening wear, hair and nail services and a special dance. With medicines that cost over $80k/year, it is a rarety for most individuals to spend money on themselves.  Being transformed for an evening is an occasion that we look forward to each year.
