Did you know that Blue Ridge Literacy serves 90% foreign-born individuals? Last year, 15% of our total 466 learners were refugees from the countries of Afghanistan, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, Nepal, and Bhutan. Over 80% of these learners were unable to read or speak English, and many were unable to read or write in their own languages. This makes navigating the bus system, going to the doctor, and finding employment so much more difficult.
There are also a number of American-born people in the region who were unable to gain the literacy skills they need to truly thrive in our society. In total, there are over 25,000 individuals in the Roanoke region who lack basic literacy skills!
The mission of Blue Ridge Literacy is to support the achievement of life goals by providing opportunities to strengthen literacy skills for adults in western Virginia. To achieve that goal, we need your support!
Your donation will enrich individual lives through literacy, so individuals can achieve their life goals of employment, citizenship, college preparation, GED completion, and much more.
Thank you for your generous support!
