Community High School
of Arts and Academics
is a small, secular, independent college preparatory high school grounded in the liberal arts, founded with a commitment to seminar-based classes, and located in Roanoke’s city center.
Our Mission is to foster creative and independent problem solvers with diverse backgrounds and abilities into scientifically and culturally literate, globally conscious, locally engaged citizens. Classes operate in a college-seminar based format and are taught by highly and widely qualified faculty committed to the progressive tradition. Students are encouraged to work directly with outside scholars and professionals by taking classes at area colleges and through formalized internships. Located in a beautifully restored historic warehouse in downtown Roanoke, our campus boasts the flexible 150-seat June M. McBroom theater, band rehearsal facilities, the LIMINAL STATION public art gallery, painting and film-editing studios, and fully equipped science laboratories.
Cost: It is the eventual goal of CHS to be wholly tuition-neutral. Toward that end, our board chose to cut tuition by over 50%, to less than a third of the cost of educating each student. Due to CHS’s generous donor base, we have been able to continue to serve our students at tuition level. Our students come from backgrounds diverse by faith, ethnicity, interest, and economic position - we have never lost a student to financial need - and are committed to becoming responsible, culturally literate, globally conscious, and locally engaged citizens.
Your donation will go towards scholarships and increasing the amount of need-based financial aid. Thank you for your support!
