Jefferson Center is a nonprofit arts and community center educating students and inspiring audiences. We rely on the support of the community to continue our mission which is to enrich our diverse communities by serving as a gathering place for community partners and individuals, presenting high quality performing arts programs, and providing educational outreach.
Arts Education has "significant effects on learning in other disciplines, with students consistently involved in theater and music showing higher levels of success in math and reading.” – The Education Commission of the United States
Our Youth Enrichment and Arts Education Center prepares local youth for future education and careers, utilizing the founding principles for learning: creativity, critical thinking, exploration, and collaboration.
A study of 25,000 students by The Education Commission of the United States concluded that students “with high levels of involvement in the art-learning experiences” earned higher grades and scored better on standardized test than those with little or no involvement in the arts – regardless of socioeconomic status.
Jefferson Center’s Youth Enrichment and Arts Education Program include the Music Lab, Summer Jazz Institute, The Song Project, Sisters of the Circle and Community Outreach. Our Youth Enrichment and Arts Education programs strive for both artistic excellence, personal growth and the opportunity to pursue avenues students do not have access to in other programs.
Driven by a mission to enhance the cultural vitality of our community, we provide outstanding talent, live music, spoken word, arts and more to enliven our theaters and gallery. Wynton Marsalis, Bela Fleck, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Dianne Reeves, David Crosby and community performances from local arts organizations such as Opera Roanoke, The SWVA Ballet, and The Roanoke Valley Children's Choir are just a few of the many legendary artists and performers who have stepped foot on our local stages since opening in 2001. These concerts attract over 20,000 patrons each year many of which are played to sold out audiences.
