LEAP for Local Food!

LEAP strives to make healthy, local food more accessible to everyone in the greater Roanoke
Valley. We operate two fixed-site markets in Roanoke. The Grandin Village Community Market has been selling great food and creating community since 2009 and the West End Community Market since 2010. LEAP also supports many partner markets: the Vinton Farmers Market, Salem Farmers Market, Floyd Farmers Market, Blacksburg Farmers Market, and the Catawba Valley Farmers Market. In 2016, our Markets served over 20,000 customers and supported over 80 local farmers and food businesses.

We expanded our innovative LEAP Mobile Market in 2016. The Mobile Market brings local produce (within 100 miles) to Roanoke neighborhoods where it is hard to buy fresh produce. At our 9 weekly stops in 2016, we sold lots of local produce and served nearly 3,000 individuals in low-income and food desert neighborhoods. In 2017, we're expanding to even more stops each week in SE and NW Roanoke. Also new this year, we're adding more Mobile Market stops, and upgrading to a 16-foot box truck to bring even more fresh, local food to under-served neighborhoods! We're working with JMU industrial design students to retrofit the truck to serve as a fully-functional farmers'-market-on-wheels.

All of our markets participate in our SNAP Double Program. We accept SNAP (food stamps) benefits and double the value ($1 in SNAP = $2 tokens to spend on fresh food). In 2016, the LEAP Markets processed and matched over $9,300 in SNAP benefits ($18,600 total value).

LEAP opened The Kitchen in April 2016. The LEAP Kitchen provides certified commercial kitchen space that incubates new and growing small food businesses (caterers, bakers, jam makers, and more!). The Kitchen also hosts community programming including cooking classes and nutrition education.

Individual donations help LEAP provide more healthy and fresh food to low income families, keep farmland in production, and incubate food-based businesses. Together we can build a stronger and healthier community!
