SML Good Neighbors, Inc. was started by members of four churches with deep concerns about children in our rural Virginia community. In Virginia, as in the rest of our nation, the rate of poverty in rural communities is over 13.5%. In the eleven elementary schools in our immediate area over 1,300 children are eligible for the free or reduced-price school lunch program. Because the schools do not provide lunches during the summer, they are left with inadequate nutrition. These are the children we serve.

We provide summer and school-year enrichment programs at no cost to families.

There is an emphasis on reading, writing and enhancement of communication skills. Additionally, enrichment programs provided include: Nature Education, Peace Education, Cultural Diversity and Global Education as well as enrichment in the arts. We also provide nutritious breakfasts, lunches and snacks for the children in addition to weekend backpacks during the summer.

Services we provide:

*Meals and weekend backpacks to summer school students, primarily those who are eligible for free or reduced-cost meals during the school year

*Summer enrichment day program for children who may need support in any of the following three areas: nutritious meals, reading enrichment, or good neighbor skills and values such as living peacefully with self and others, understanding one's role in the larger world and ways to make a positive difference

*After-school programs through partnerships with FRV, the Roanoke Children’s Theatre and local artists

*Middle School Academy with a primary focus on academics; giving scholars an opportunity to be on or above grade level

*Opportunities for leadership development and vocational exploration for college students through service-learning internships

*Organize community resources to address the needs of children

Your support is invaluable and makes a difference! Thank you!

This program has been a benchmark experience for me over the past 12 years. Words fail to describe the good it is doing.
