To narrow the achievement gap in education and career in Roanoke Valley.
If each parent is raising a reader, and each child knows the joy and success of reading, we can transform Roanoke.
WHY IT MATTERS:
How parents and caregivers communicate to children from 0 to 2, significantly affects IQ, literacy, and academic success. The breadth of vocabiulary heard by a child during the first few years can dramatically affect future language development and educational success.
READING ALOUD TO CHILDREN IS A GREAT AND SIMPLE WAY TO NARROW THE GAP.
Currently we are giving Roanoke Baby and Four Fur Feet to every child born at Roanoke Memorial, a third book to NICU families, books in the PICU, a book cart in waiting rooms, books at Hurt Park Elementary, CHIP, and beginning in 2018 - pilot book programs in local pediatrician offices.
